Comps, Drôme

Comps is a commune of 165 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Rhône-Alpes region in the Drome region; it belongs to the canton in the arrondissement of Nyons Dieulefit.

Geography

Comps is at an average altitude of 680 meters above sea level, seven kilometers north-east of Dieulefit and 34 kilometers east of Montelimar. Through the town flows the Jabron, and two of its tributaries, the Rimandoule and the Ruisseau de alfalfa.

History

The oldest written mentions of Comps as Castrum de cums originate from 1210 and 1293 ( Castrum de Combis ). In the Middle Ages comps was a fortress of the Counts of Valentinois, later it was Vesc, then report to the House De Moreton de Chabrillan. Its inhabitants are called Compsois or Compsoises.

  • St. Peter and Paul Church ( Église Saint- Pierre -et-Saint -Paul ), dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, dating from the 11th century; cruciform building with a central tower, inside octagonal dome. ( Monument historique )
  • Rectangular castle with four corner towers dating from the 16th century.
  • Ruins of a medieval Kastralburg at the highest point of the municipality.
