Comunidad de Calatayud

The Comunidad de Calatayud (German Community Calatayud ) is a Comarca (administrative unit ) of the Aragon Autonomous Community in Spain. It is located in the southwest of the province of Zaragoza and has an area of ​​2518 km ² 40,333 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). The name derives from Calatayud is the capital, which is also the largest of the 67 associated municipalities and about half of the population presents.

The comarca was formed by Act of the Autonomous Community of Aragon 18 June 2001, which also contains the basic provisions to its constitution.

Originally the Comunidad even larger and included communities that were now one of the provinces of Guadalajara and Soria. It is bordered to the west by the province of Soria, on the north by the Comarcas Aranda and Valdejalón, in the east to the Campo de Carintilde and Campo de Daroca and on the south by the province of Guadalajara.

Particular part of the cultural heritage of the comarca of the old town of Calatayud with several churches in the Baroque and Mudejar style. Above the town stands a medieval castle, the eponymous Castle of Ayub. Six kilometers from the center Calatayuds are the ruins of the Roman Bilbilis, in which the poet Martial was born. In addition to Calatayud also Cervera de la Cañada, Morata de Jiloca, Belmonte de Gracian or Ateca have towers on the Mudejar style.

In addition, the Monasterio de Piedra, to mention a former Cistercian monastery dating from the late 12th century. It is located near Nuévalos and is surrounded by amazing for the dry southern Aragon Nature Park with rich flora and ponds for fish farming. In one part of the former monastery now houses a hotel.

In Paracuellos, Alhama de Aragón and Jaraba there are spas that enjoyed high popularity in the late 19th century. In recent decades, the spa facilities were modernized, the visit has increased again. In the municipality of Alhama de Aragón is located the biggest thermal lake of Spain.
