Conejo Island

Isla Conejo is a 0.5 km ² small, uninhabited island in the Gulf of Fonseca on the Pacific coast of Central America. Littoral states of the Gulf are Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua. The Isla Conejo, one of more than 30 islands in the Gulf, is 1 km off the south coast of Honduras.

History

In the judgment of the Central American Court of 9 March 1917, the waters and the islands in the Gulf of Fonseca was awarded the State of El Salvador. On 11 September 1992, the International Court of Justice ( ICJ) in The Hague overturned this ruling and said Honduras possession of the islands. Since 1993, Honduras has stationed a military unit on the Isla Conejo, the daily hoists or down brings the national flag.

El Salvador rises, however, still claim ownership and refers to a border treaty, which was signed in Guatemala City on April 9, 1938. In this Agreement, Honduras had renounced the islands in the Gulf of Fonseca.

Current situation

Since 2012 the number of cases in which mutually accuse the governments of Honduras and El Salvador each other transgressions and violation of fishing rights is growing.

In September 2013, the Hondurans celebrated the 192 anniversary of independence from Spain with a ceremony on the island. El Salvador sentenced then the "military and de facto illegal occupation " by Honduras and demanded in a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki -moon, the immediate " evacuation of the Island". On the other hand, feels provoked by Honduras that the Salvadoran government in Chile has ordered ten aircraft Cessna A- 37B Dragonfly.
