Cong, County Mayo

Cong ( Irish: Conga, Conga older Fheichín ) is a village with 150 inhabitants (2006) in County Mayo in the west of Ireland. It is located near the border with County Galway on the five -mile-wide isthmus land bridge that separates from the Lough Corrib Lough Mask. The two lakes are connected by aboveground and underground streams and caverns with each other in the local area.

Just outside of Cong is with the Ashford Castle is one of the most exclusive luxury hotels in Ireland. It is located in a converted medieval Castle and is already structurally an attraction. The second point of interest is located right in the city ruins of Cong Abbey. It was founded by the Augustinians in the 12th century, built on the site of a settlement from the 6th century, and was abandoned in 1542. A high cross, a well-preserved window and just such a doorway are still available. The park of the monastery with the Monks Fishing Cottage is worth seeing. The greatest treasure of the monastery, the Cross of Cong, a medieval jeweled cross, located in the National Museum in Dublin.

East of the village are the remains of the Cong Canal, also known as the Dry Canal known. It was an attempt to connect from the 19th century, Lough Corrib and Lough Mask with each other. As allowed in the water channel, it seeps into the porous limestone before it had reached the end of the channel. The plans to seal the channel bed were never realized. Today, some of the remains serve as a sewer.
