Congener (chemistry)

Congeners (including congeners ) are chemical compounds with the same strain that is the same basic structure. In contrast to the isomeric compounds, which all have the same molecular formula, these may vary for different congeners.

The respective compounds may have different chemical, physical and toxicological properties. They often occur as a mixture.

Examples:

  • Polychlorinated biphenyls ( PCBs) [ mixture of up to 209 substances ]
  • Polychlorinated dibenzo -p -dioxins ( PCDDs)
  • Polychlorinated dibenzofurans ( PCDF)
  • Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCN )
  • Polybrominated dibenzo -p -dioxins ( PBDD )
  • Polybrominated dibenzofurans ( PBDF )
  • Mixed- halogenated dibenzo -p -dioxins ( PHDD )
  • Mixed - halogenated dibenzofurans ( PHDF )
  • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers ( PBDEs)
  • Polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs )
  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ( PAHs)
