Congochromis (Congo " chromis " = old ref for. Cichlids ) is a genus of the family of cichlids ( Cichlidae ), with the tropical West Africa in Chari, Ubangi, in Liboumba in the basin of the Ogooué and in the upper and middle Congo basin Likouala and the Sangha is widespread. The genus was separated from Nanochromis until 2007. Nanochromis was already divided into two groups, which can be distinguished anatomically, the nudiceps group which remains with Nanochromis and squamiceps group whose types are (and a newly described ) provided new genus Congochromis.

Features

Congochromis species are 5.2 to 6.5 cm long and have elongated, little hochrückige and little laterally flattened body. The number of its vertebrae is 24 to 27 The Congochromis species have four sensory pores on the lower jaw ( five in Nanochromis ), not on the Anguloarticulare ( lower jaw bone) and six on the Vorkiemendeckel ( seven in Nanochromis ). Both Nanochromis and Congochromis have increased sideline adjacent part of the dorsal fin, at Congochromis with the last three to five provided with pores of lateral line scales, in Nanochromis with the rear half of the side line. The neck is completely scaly at Congochromis, chest and cheek are partially scaly (not for Nanochromis ). The maxillary teeth are robust, unicuspid, and are not close to each other, at Nanochromis they are very fine -pointed, and are close together. Congochromis has not a small Supraneurale, Nanochromis.

Nanochromis is the sister genus of Congochromis and both share some features, including the increased lateral line and a reduction of the infra orbital bones (below the eyes) into a single.
