Congress of the Union

The Union Mexico Congress ( Congreso de la Unión de México ) is the legislature of the State of Mexico. It consists of two chambers, the Senate ( Senado de México ) and the House of Representatives.

The Senate ( Cámara de Senadores or Senado ) is composed of 128 senators. They represent the state as a whole and are elected for six years. The senators are composed of two Senators for the 31 states and the Federal District, elected from candidates of each strongest party, as well as one of the Senator 's second largest party. Another 32 senators are determined by proportional representation throughout the country.

The Chamber of Deputies ( Cámara de Deputies corresponds to the British House of Commons ) consists of 500 deputies. Each represents an average of 200,000 voters ( for three years without re-election ). Here, 300 members are elected directly ( " representación proporcional ", according to majority vote in single-member constituencies ) and 200 indirectly ( " mayoria relativa " ), proportionally according to a complicated list suffrage. The composition corresponds approximately to the percentage of the parties throughout the country.
