Conrad Vetter

Conrad S. J. Vetter (* 1548 in Engen, † October 11, 1622 in Munich) was a Swabian Jesuit and writer of the Counter Reformation.

Life

Cousin attended school in his native gene and then served for several years despite his youth as a chaplain of the Ladies pin in Schwäbisch Hall. At the age of 28, he entered the Jesuit order in 1576 in Munich at. Even as a novice showed his brilliant rhetoric as well as his oratorical talent that predestined him for future propagandists of the Counter-Reformation outright. His monk Guido Maria Dreves S. J. designated in the 19th century cousin unusual talent as " well as fruit - awful ".

Cousin oratorical reputation spread rapidly, and in 1588 he was employed as a preacher in Regensburg, where he particularly excelled by conversion of many Protestants. However, his sharp polemical anti-Lutheran publications met with considerable criticism, even from within the ranks. Even the great Catholic historian Johannes Janssen attested him an almost " unedifying craftsmanship " in the German language.

Especially through the translations of the Counter-Reformation writings of Jakob Gretser SJ cousin became known quickly. To achieve the lowest classes, he used a folksy - pictorial, blustering - Bavarian sound that makes them stand out him out of the usual, drier controversial theological literature.
