Constans II (usurper)

Constans ( II; † 411 in Vienne ) was from 409 ( or 410 ) to 411 co-ruler of the western Roman Emperor Constantine counter ( III.). Because he was never generally recognized as emperor, he leads the ordinal II or unofficially from Western Roman perspective. In the Eastern and overall Roman emperor Constans II lists it is Emperor ( 641-668 ) reserved.

Constans was the elder of the two sons of Constantine (III ), who had risen 407 in Britain against Emperor Honorius and after the military evacuation of the island which reigned over Gaul and Spain. As relatives of Honorius 408 in Spain instigated a revolt, Constans was brought by his father from the monastery, appointed Caesar and sent to the Heermeister Gerontius to Spain. His younger brother, Julian was awarded the title Nobilissimus. After the suppression of the uprising Constans left his wife and his court in the custody of Gerontius in Zaragoza to return to report to Arles, where his father had established his residence.

409 Constans was ordered to return to Spain, to repel the Suevi, Alans and Vandals, who reached the Pyrenees on their train through Gaul in September. Constantine brought Constans to the rank of Augustus ( Mitkaisers ) and transferred the command of the new General Justus. Then Gerontius rebelled and called his son (or subordinates ) from Maximus also to Augustus. The feared attack from Spain was made in the year 410, as Gerontius advancing in association with Germanic allies to Gaul. 411 Constans beginning of Gerontius was besieged, captured and executed in Vienne. His father Konstantin suffered little later in Arles by the military chief and later Emperor Constantius the same fate.
