Conus furvus

Calibanus Furvus, the type species of the genus Calibanus

Calibanus Furvus is a species of cone snails ( Conidae ). Following the comprehensive revision of the Conidae by John Tucker and Manuel Tenorio many types of the former (major) genus Conus are now housed in separate smaller genera. Calibanus Furvus is the only and thus typical species of the genus Calibanus da Motta, 1991.

Features

The to about 5 cm long ( " high " ) housing is conical with a medium- high apex. The height of the apex is somewhat variable. The shoulders are narrow rounded. The seams are formed more or less clearly. The front (or " lower" ) end of the housing is darkened brown to purple. Tent -like spots are only poorly developed or absent. The surface is apart from weak spiral growth lines and nearly smooth. The color varies from a lighter brown to cream. The surface often has somewhat darker helical lines which are interrupted at the intersection points with the growth lines. Coloration and patterns are highly variable, there are very bright, almost white housing, but also greatly darkened, almost dark brown case before. da Motta distinguishes several formae. F in the wide albicans, irregular streaks are aligned parallel to the Anwachsstreifung and show approaches to tent-like recesses.

The Analeinbuchtung is moderately deep to deep. The operculum is small, and the protoconch is paucispiral, ie has only one or two turns.

The harpoon- like teeth have only a short blade and a short barbs. The front section of the tooth towards the rear section greatly prolonged (about ¾ to ¼). Lung teeth on the shaft are provided, the Basalsporn is missing. The base of the tooth is thickened.

Lifestyle and deposits

Calibanus Furvus occurs in the tropical seas of the Indo- Pacific. Little is known about the way of life. In captivity, the kind hunted other cone snails.

Systematics, taxonomy and nomenclature

Antonio da Motta and John Tucker and Manuel Tenorio have formerly very large genus Conus highly concentrated. Most species were smaller, z.T. assigned to new genera. Conus Furvus Reeve, 1843 is the type species and only species of the genus Calibanus da Motta, 1991, The variability of the housing shape and the color pattern was the reason for a large number of synonyms for this style:. Conus aegrotus Reeve, 1849, Conus albicans GB Sowerby II, 1857 GB Sowerby III Conus albus, 1887, Conus buxeus Reeve, 1844, Conus cecilei Kiener, 1845, Conus crepusculum Reeve, 1844, Conus granifer Reeve, 1849, Conus Lignarius Reeve, 1843, Conus multilineatus GB Sowerby III, 1875, Conus neobuxeus da Motta, 1991, Conus nivalis da Motta, 1985, Conus polygrammus Tomlin, 1937 and Conus turritinus da Motta, 1985. Calibanus The genus da Motta is by Nam et al. (2009) based on molecular genetic data are not recognized and " Conus " Furvus assigned to the genus Darioconus.
