Copa Centenario Revolución de Mayo

The Campeonato Sudamericano took place from 27 May to 12 June 1910 in Argentina instead. This contest was held in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Argentine Declaration of Independence of 25 May 1810 and is therefore in retrospect often called a Copa Centenario Revolución de Mayo. He was the first international tournament in South America, which was attended by more than two football nations. Until then there was only contests, which were held between the national football teams of Uruguay and Argentina, as the Copa Newton, the Copa Lipton and the Gran Premio de Honor Argentino. Chile also played at this tournament, his first international match at all.

Since in this tournament three of the later four founding members of CONMEBOL participated, it may be viewed as precursors of the same competition Campeonato Sudamericano, today's Copa América. Often it was then even upgraded to the first Copa América. However, it is known neither by a contemporary source nor the CONMEBOL or by the participating organizations as the first South American Championship history. Even Argentina raised so far no claim to the title of Master of South America 1910.

The tournament was played in league mode. The three games were played in Buenos Aires in three different stages in the Cancha de Gimnasia y Esgrima, in the Cancha de Belgrano and the Colegiales en Palermo. All three stages then summarized about 8,000 to 10,000 spectators. Won the tournament hosts Argentina.

Comments

Argentina was his favorite role. The Argentines dominated in these years the football in South America. This is also evident at the former Argentine international games against their big rivals Uruguay. Until the 4-1 success at this tournament they had in 13 compare times won the duel with the " Urus " eight and two times lost in three draws. This time there was nothing to get for Uruguay.

Uruguay's defeat against Argentina at that time was not a surprise. The Argentine then presented which clearly stronger team. It was not until the middle of the decade attracted the " Urus " with its southern neighbors the same. In particular, at the Copa América and the other major tournaments they were successful then even into the 30s inside.

For Chile began his international history at this tournament. The 1-3 defeat against Argentina was also the first international match of the Chileans. You were there absolutely no chance against their competition if they could annoy some by their 1-0 opening goal by Frank Simmons also the Argentines.
