Copenhagen metropolitan area

Hovedstadsområdet ( Eng.: The metropolitan area ) is the continuous settlement (Danish: byområde ) around and including the municipality of Copenhagen, the Danish capital. It is by far the largest city (Danish: by) the over 1400 cities in Denmark. Its territory covers around 400 square kilometers. Like all cities in Denmark it makes no administrative unit, but is only a statistical term. Since the administrative territorial reform of 2007, the metropolitan area lies almost entirely in the larger Capital Region; only the municipality of Greve is in the region of Sjælland.

Historical development

Historically Hovedstadsområdet was first considered by Danmarks Statistik as a whole range of complete communities, which has been redefined at intervals.
