Coppélia

The ballet Coppélia ou La Fille aux yeux d' émail ( German Coppelia or The Girl with the glass eyes ) was composed in 1870 by Léo Delibes to a libretto by Charles and Arthur Saint -Léon Nuitter, the latter created the original choreography. The plot is based on ETA Hoffmann's tale The Sandman. The premiere took place on 25 May 1870, the Paris Opera instead, with Eugenie Fiocre as Franz, and was a triumphant success. To date, Coppélia is part of the standard repertoire of classical ballet.

Action

Act 1

On a village square

The old Dr. Coppélius spent his whole life trying to develop his magical powers. Sometimes they worked, but mostly he was unsuccessful. His biggest dream and ambition is to bring Coppélia, one of his mechanical dolls to life. Nobody knows the town what Coppélius drives, but often frighten noises and explosions in his mysterious house on the citizens.

One day brings Dr. Coppélius Coppélia on the balcony. He enthusiastically noted that all they think is alive. Swanilda, who lives on the opposite side of the street, it did not like the fact that you do not take notice of Coppélia, the attention but her fiancé Franz turns. The Mayor appears and advises Swanilda to test the loyalty of Franz with an ear of corn: it rattles, his love is real. Before leaving the place, the mayor announced that all are invited to the ducal seat. At the dedication of the church bell donated by the Duke to find a " masque the bell" are listed.

Once all are gone, return Swanilda and her friends and decorate the room for the festivities the next day. Curious, they decide to sneak into the house of Dr. Coppélius and to -is the mysterious girl on the balcony even closer. As soon as she disappeared through the door, Franz emerges. It has the same idea.

Act 2

In Dr. Coppélius ' workshop, a little later

In the workshop, discover Swanilda and her friends amazed that Coppélia is just a doll. Coppélius returns and sells the girls. Only Swanilda can hide unnoticed. As Franz enters the house, Coppélius threatened him first, but then he offers him a cup of wine to amicably. An admixed sleeping pills can Franz fall into a deep sleep. With incantations from his spell book the soul of Franz shall pass to Coppélia and animate them so. In the meantime, however Swanilda has taken the place of Coppélia created and whose costume and mask. When she starts to dance, believes Dr. Coppélius to have created a living being. Also awoke Franz begins passionately to flirt with her until Swanilda full of anger decreases the mask and runs away. Suddenly came to his senses, Franz smashed the shop, take the doll and also flees from the house.

Act 3

In the ducal gardens on the following evening

Solemnly passes the Duke the new bell and blessed Francis, Swanilda and another couple, who announced their wedding on this day, with bags full of gold coins. Franz is laughed at by the girls because he out of his mind has grown from a doll so much can bring. The festivities interrupts Dr. Coppélius. Beside himself, he laments the destruction of his workshop, but the generous Duke reconciled him with a bag of gold, and he gets back Coppélia.

Now the reconciliation of Franz and Swanilda nothing stands in the way, and the masque can start with the " Dance of the Hours " and " Pull Up a New Day ". Allegorical dances symbolize the call of the bell for prayer, to work, to the wedding, the call to arms and finally to the proclamation of peace, where Swanilda and Franz to insure their love.

Alone and forgotten remains Coppélius back, but in the knowledge that at least once his magic powers actually worked.

Productions

Chemnitz Opera

Coppélia had in a new production at the Chemnitz Opera premiere on May 1, 2004. Choreography and staging were from Thorsten dealer. The piece was transferred to a school in the early 20th century. Here, the first act took place in a classroom, the second act in the cabinet of Dr. Copelius, and the third act played at the award certificate in the auditorium.

Staatstheater Karlsruhe

The Karlsruhe Coppélia which celebrated its premiere in 2005 on 19 November, was staged by the English choreographer Peter Wright. In the choreography, Peter Wright oriented closely to the original by Marius Petipa and Enrico Cecchetti. The action was transferred to a small town on the Galician- Hungarian border. The scenery and costumes by Peter Farmer. Music: Badische Staatskapelle Karlsruhe.

Vienna State Opera

The piece had sen in the choreography of Gyula Harangozó on 29 January 2006. Premiere. His son, Gyula Harangozó jun. modernized the staging, the stage came from the Hungarian musician Centaur and the costumes by Rita Velich. Polina Semionova played the Swanilda, Tamás Solymosi her bridegroom French in the role of Luke Coppélius Gaudernak was to see and Shoko Nakamura in the role of his doll Coppélia.

Semperoper Dresden

Coppélia had 5 February 2011 at the Semperoper in Dresden premiere. The new production is based on George Balanchine's version of 1974, who went back for his " Coppélia " on the classic choreography by Marius Petipa.

Country Detmold

Had a new staging of the Detmold Municipal Theatre on October 12, 2012 in the staging and choreography by Richard Lowe and under the musical direction of Matthias Wegele premiere. The equipment procured Petra MOLLERUS, the dramaturgy Elisabeth Wirtz. Charline Dujardin danced the Swanilda, Egid Mináč Franz, Gaëtan Chailly Dr. Coppelius and Gisela Fontarnau i Galea the Coppelia. It has played the Symphonic Orchestra of the State Theatre Detmold.
