The band was founded in 1987 and was active until 1998. After that, the band members moved to different parts of the United States. After the band in 2002 released an album with older material, they reformed in 2007 on the occasion of its twentieth anniversary.

History

Cordelia 's Dad was founded in 1987 by three students of Amherst College: Tim Eriksen ( bass, vocals ), Peter Irvine (drums ) and Tom King ( guitar). Although all three were already come with traditional American music in contact, the original sound of the band was more like the alternative rock of bands like Dinosaur Jr. Their first, yet -untitled album was therefore also included in the Boston Fort Apache Studios, where simultaneously the Pixies, Uncle Tupelo and other recorded their albums. The main distinguishing feature compared to their Fort Apache colleagues was that Cordelia's Dad resorted first publications with only a few exceptions, Anglo- American folk songs that have been listed as a feedback -heavy rock songs. Their second album, How Can I Sleep, which was recorded by Dave Schramm, continued the use of traditional material, but increased the proportion of such pieces, which were interpreted as acoustic folk songs. This change led to the trend to designate the band's music as " schizophrenisch ".

The conversion to the folk band was completed in 1993 with The Joy Fun Garden, one in Germany only in a limited edition ( in normal - Records sublabel " Return to Sender " ) published mini-album. King left the band after the recording and was replaced by bassist Cath Oss. Eriksen then moved to guitar. The third regular album Comet ( Omnium 1993 ) received - down to the last piece of " Jersey City" and bonus tracks on international publications - only acoustic recordings.

The band initially said goodbye to their rock sound with the published 1996 live album Roadkill ( Scenesof ). After Cordelia 's Dad was continued as a purely acoustic project; the rock songs were delegated to a side project called "io ". The members of the main band had begun at this time to revive the form of the "Shape note Singings ". The new influence set out on the fourth album Spine ( Appleseed 1998) felt that was recorded by Steve Albin and for which the violinist Laura Risk joined the band. Spine was the best -reviewed by critics album of the band. But it was also the last for four years after the band members had begun to leave their base in Western Massachusetts. Irvine moved to Portland, Oregon to practice as a music lawyer. Oss moved to Newcastle upon Tyne and later played in the band Spraydog. Eriksen moved to Minneapolis and began a career as a musicologist, in the course of which he was also invited for the recordings for the feature film Cold Mountain and its soundtrack there.

The so far last album What It Is ( Appleseed ) was published in 2002, but contained only shots that were not considered in the two previous albums because of their rock format. After that, the band remained inactive until two of its founding members - Eriksen and Irvine - returned to Massachusetts and the twentieth anniversary of the band a number of local concerts mostly rock, played a part as a folk band.
