Cornas

Cornas is a commune with 2246 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Ardèche, Rhône-Alpes region. It is located about five miles north- west of Valence on the orographic right side of the Rhone River and has an area of 833 hectares.

The name is of Celtic origin and means Cornas burned or burnt earth. This name reflects the micro-climatic conditions (hot and quite dry ) combined with the granite and limestone soils resist well. The community is known for its red wine vinified there.

Cornas wine region

The municipality is the wine region Cornas her name. This red wine of the northern Rhône has since 5 August 1938 status of a Appellation d' Origine ( AOC short ). The vineyards cover 125 hectares. The steep slopes are partly terraced. In the year 2011 4.455 hectoliters of wine were produced here.

Syrah is the only grape permitted. The minimum alcohol content is 10.5 percent. If a dry sugaring ( Chaptalisation ) is approved, the maximum alcohol content is 13.5 °. The yield is limited to 36 hectoliters / hectare.

The best-known wineries are those of Auguste and Pierre -Marie and Thierry Allemand Clappe.
