Cornelia Ernst

Cornelia Ernst ( born November 30, 1956 in Bad Saarow ) is a German politician (The Left ). She was a member of the Saxon parliament from 2007 to 2009 Regional Chairman of the Left in Saxony since 1998. In the European elections 2009, she was elected to the European Parliament.

Life and career

After graduating from high school in 1974 and entering the SED Ernst graduated in 1979 the diploma in teacher. It was in 1983 with the work " The History of the International Women's Day in the transitional period from capitalism to socialism in the GDR (1945 / 46-1961 ) " doctorate at the University of Leipzig and was until 1991 teacher trainer at the Institute for Teacher Education in Great grove.

Political activity

From 1991 to 1998 she was a consultant in the parliamentary working group Basic Social Protection of the PDS Group in the Saxon parliament and from 1995 to 2001 deputy chair of the PDS Saxony.

As of November 1998, Ernst Member of the Saxon Parliament. In November 2001 she was elected chairman of the PDS Saxony and was the successor of Peter Porsch. After the merger of WASG and PDS to the Left Party in June 2007, she was elected chairperson of the national association of Saxony. She was a member of the Interior Committee and the Committee on Constitution, Law and Europe in the parliament. As a local politician, she represented her party in the Dresden City Hall.

Since 2009 she is a member of the European Parliament. In EU Parliament Ernst is a member of the Board of the Group Confederal Group of the European United Left / Nordic Green Left. She is a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and the Delegation for relations with Afghanistan. As deputy Ernst is in the Committee on Regional Development and the Committee on Women and Gender Equality rights.
