Cornelius a Lapide

Cornelius a Lapide, also Cornelis Cornelissen van den Steen ( born December 8, 1567 Bocholt near Liege, † March 12, 1637 in Rome) was a Jesuit and professor of exegesis. His writings on biblical interpretation were common in the 17th and 19th centuries.

Life

As at that time among scholars usual, he transferred his original - Dutch - Cornelis Cornelissen name van den Steen ( = of the stone or the stone) into Latin, as he wrote his writings in Latin. Between 1577 and 1584 he attended the Cologne Marzellengymnasium and then studied in Leuven.

In 1592 he joined the Jesuit Order. From 1598 to 1616 he was professor of exegesis in Leuven, then until his death at the Collegium Romanum in Rome. For the entire Bible (except the Psalms and Job ), he wrote extensive commentaries with many materials. He is considered one of the most prolific exegete of the Jesuit Order. The first collected edition of his works appeared at Antwerp in 1681 and included ten folio volumes. His commentaries on the Bible were apparently among the Catholic clergy until 1900 the most to the spread. However, the quality of his work not related to their wide distribution even in the opinion of Catholic professionals all in proportion.
