Cornelius Schnauber

Cornelius Schnauber ( born April 18, 1939 in Freital, † February 21, 2014 in Los Angeles ) was a professor of German literature, history, rhetoric, term customer, opera and film at the University of Southern California ( USC) in Los Angeles and German writers.

Curriculum vitae

After studying German literature, phonetics and Political Sciences and the Promotion in Hamburg in 1965, he moved to the USA in 1966 and was formerly a professor at the University of North Dakota, for two years to become a professor of German literature at USC later. Here he founded the Max Kade Institute for Austrian - German -Swiss Studies and passes it as a director. Since 1973 Schnauber organized international events, seminars and " workshops" with prominent writers, politicians, musicians, film-makers of the German-speaking countries and the USA in Los Angeles.

Since 1992 he also worked as a German diction coach at the Los Angeles Opera under the General Placido Domingo. Five years later he processed these experiences as the author of a book on Domingo. Schnauber was editor and commentator of Fritz Lang and Billy Wilder's texts and author of scientific articles and essays on literature and prosody, music theory, Nazi era, Concrete Art, Poetry, exiled writers and filmmakers in Hollywood as well as the contemporary literature of Switzerland and Austria. He worked for several years as employees of Deutsche Welle and the Bavarian Radio, the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and as a consultant for television stations and film productions such as the movie Hitler - The Rise of Evil.

Since 1999 Schnauber organized exhibitions as well as artistic and academic events in Dresden, to strengthen relations between Saxony and Los Angeles and was for several years the liaison between the Shoah Foundation and the Saxon government. He was co-founder and co-chairman of the German - Jewish Dialogues in Los Angeles.

Schnauber been a member of the PEN Centre of German-speaking authors abroad.

  • First recipient of the " Lifetime Achievement Award" from the " American Association of Teachers of German " ( 2003).
