Çoruh River

The Çoruh ( Turkish ) or Tschorochi (Georgian - ჭოროხი ) is a 376 km long river, the ( 3225 m) rises in the north-eastern Turkey on mescit Dağ in Erzurum. The river flows westward to İspir and Bayburt. He then bends to the east and passes through the province of Artvin to Georgia, where it flows south of Batumi in the Black Sea. An important tributary is the Merehevi Suyu, which opens in Artvin in the Çoruh.

History

Miroj Salvini locates the Iron Age kingdom Diaueḫe in the upper Çoruh Valley, but there is no archaeological evidence.

The ancient name of Çoruh is Acampsis. After Diakonov and Qashgai the Çoruh corresponds to the ancient Τάοχοι / Τάοι. Prokopios of Caesarea knows the Çoruh than Boaz. However, he confused him in the mouth with the Phasis, which is 70 km further north. He further reports that the Çoruh from Artvin is navigable ( water-rich tributary Merehevi Suyu ).
