Cory Spinks

Cory Spinks ( born February 20, 1978 in St. Louis ) is an American boxer.

Amateur

Spinks had a successful amateur career, he won among others the prestigious 1997 National Golden Gloves tournament and reached a record of ( 78-3 ).

Professional

He denied in November 1997, his successful pro debut at light welterweight. Back in 1998, but he suffered his first defeat against Mexican Antonio Díaz.

Welterweight

After this setback, he moved to the welterweight division and he won his next sixteen fights and got so on 13 April 2004, the opportunity to fight against Michele Piccirillo in Italy for the vacant IBF. Although he lost on points disputed, but won the rematch on March 22, 2003 and thus secured the title of the IBF.

Then Spinks came to a fight with Ricardo Mayorga, the title holder of the WBA and WBC, at. He went as underdogs in this fight, but could ultimately prevail on points and was by this title club narrowing the undisputed welterweight world champion. He owed the success not least, however, two point deductions for Mayorga that the fight would have ended in a draw without.

The title he defended then against Zab Judah and former long-time lightweight world champion of WBC Miguel Ángel González. On 5 February 2005, he met with his next title defense in his hometown of St. Louis before 22,000 spectators again to Judah. Spinks lost this encounter and thus its title by technical knockout in the ninth round.

Light Middleweight

He then remained inactive for more than a year and only returned on 8 July 2006 as Halbmittelgewichtler back into the ring. His opponent was IBF world champion in the light middleweight Roman Karmazin. Spinks won just on points.

Family

Cory Spinks is the son of Leon Spinks and the nephew of Michael Spinks. He was born five days after his father's sensational victory over the World Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali. His brother Darrell Spinks (born 1973 ) from 1995 to 2000, also a professional boxer, but with only moderate success. Another brother, Leon Calvin Spinks, was murdered in 1990.
