Cosimo II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany

Cosimo II de ' Medici ( born May 12, in 1590 Florence, † February 28, 1621 ibid ) from the Medici family was since 1609 when Grand Duke of Tuscany succeeded his father Ferdinando I.

In the fall of 1610, he appointed his former teacher Galileo Galilei to the court mathematician and philosopher - and the First professor of mathematics in Pisa - without any teaching duties. He was given full freedom to devote himself entirely to research. Cosimo later served as a protector of Galileo against the Inquisition.

Cosimo married on October 19, 1608 Maria Magdalena of Austria, daughter of Archduke Karl. The couple had eight children:

The ill with stomach ulcers, tuberculosis and arthritis Cosimo II died on February 28, 1621 in Florence.
