Cosmopterix athesiae is a butterfly (moth ) from the family of the splendor butterfly ( Cosmopterigidae ). The species was already in 1898 by the Danish researcher Wilhelm von Hedemann ( 1836-1903 ) collected in Bolzano, but surprisingly identified as a new species until 2007. It is named after its location in the Adige ( Athesis is the old Latin name of the river Adige ).
The moths have a wingspan of about 10 millimeters. Their wings are drawn metallic shiny, brown, yellow and white.
The nocturnal species is known so far from Italy ( South Tyrol), the Mediterranean (Spain, Greece) and from Africa ( Cameroon, Tanzania ), a distribution pattern that is very unusual for a butterfly. The adults are attracted by artificial light sources. About the lifestyle and the caterpillar food plants is not yet known, the moths were found in oak forests and in verbuschtem terrain.
