Coteau du Missouri

The Coteau du Missouri, or Missouri Plateau is a large plateau which extends along the east side of the valley of the Missouri River in central North Dakota and north of South Dakota in the United States.

Geologically, the plateau is part of the extensive Great Plains in the Dakotas, and is the main plateau to the west separated by the Missouri River trench. The surface of the plateau is slate, which are stored on the deposits of this recurring ice ages. The plateau also consists of deposits of lignite, sodium sulfate ( Glauber's salt), and bentonite.

The country is crossed by the former river valleys of the Grand River, Moreau River, Cheyenne River, Bad River and White River, which then further submitted to the east.

From the Coteau des Prairies to the east the plateau is through the valley of the James River, which has been formed in the last ice age.
