The Coton de Tulear is a recognized by the FCI breed from Madagascar (FCI Group 9, Section 1.2, Standard No. 283 ). The patronage is in France, that is, the breed standard is developed by the French Breeding Association.

Origin and History

Coton de Tulear (French cotton of Tulear ) was for centuries the exclusive lap dog of the rich residents of Tulear in the south of Madagascar. He was bred here pure. Related breed are the French Bichon Frise, the Bolognese, the Maltese, the Havanese and Löwchen ( Petit chien lion ). After Madagascar his ancestors came probably with French soldiers and administrators. Until about 20 years of dog in Europe and America was to get as good as unknown and difficult.

Description

The Coton de Tulear can be up to 29 cm tall and 6 kg, those high on the skull, unused, triangular drop ears are barely visible in the white coat. Cotton Soft and fluffy fur is characterized. Some traces of light gray color ( mixture of white and black hairs ) or of red-roan ( mixture of white and fawn hairs ) are permitted on the ears. At the other body, such shadings can be tolerated, provided that the general appearance of white coat is not disturbed. The Coton de Tulear has no undercoat.

Nature

The breed standard describes the Coton de Tulear as of a cheerful nature, balanced and very easy to get along with other dogs, other animals and humans; it adapts perfectly to any lifestyle. There it is emphasized that the temperament of the Coton de Tulear is one of the main characteristics of the breed.
