Countess Palatine Maria Eufrosyne of Zweibrücken

Marie Euphrosine von Pfalz -Zweibrücken - Kleeburg (* February 14, 1625 Stegeborg Castle, † October 24, 1687 in Höjentorp ) was a Countess Palatine of Zweibrücken- Kleeburg and by marriage Countess De la Gardie.

Life

Marie Euphrosine was a daughter of the Count Palatine Johann Casimir of Zweibrücken - Kleeburg (1589-1652) from his marriage to Princess Catherine (1584-1638), daughter of King Charles IX. from Sweden. Her brother was in 1654 when Charles X Gustav King of Sweden. Euphrosyne was educated in common with the later Swedish Queen Christina.

They married on March 7, 1647 in Stockholm later to become the Swedish Count Magnus Gabriel Chancellor De la Gardie ( 1622-1686 ). Marie Euphrosine held on to their native language. The children were Lutheran and raised bilingually. The Countess wrote to her death in the letter to her husband in German. After her brother's accession to the throne Marie Euphrosine was given the rank of a royal princess; the title of countess she never performed. In 1682 year a large proportion of goods De la Gardie was confiscated by the king what the family plunged into deep poverty.

Marie Euphrosine is in Varnhem, in the grave chapel of the De la Gardie family, buried at her husband's side. The tomb is decorated with busts of the pair of alabaster.
