Coupe Icare
The Coupe Icare ( German: Icarus competition ) is a four-day, held annually Flight Festival for aircraft of free flight.
It was first held in 1974 held in Saint Hilaire du Touvet in Isère (France ) and thus is considered the oldest open- air festival in the world. The goal is to have hang-gliders and paragliders fly next, unusual things. Allowed is everything - whether it is a bed, a 2CV - Duck on a paraglider or equal to a whole house.
Thus it is comparable to the Red Bull air shows, however, the aircraft will not be launched from a ramp, but start from one of the four starting positions with about 1000 meters altitude difference or be dropped from an airplane. For this reason, but (almost) all aircraft have a relatively good fit to fly.
The Coupe Icare every year attracts about 8,000 airmen and 40,000 spectators from around the world. Along with the Air Festival will be held a fancy dress competition, a fair and a film festival.
2005 there was a fatal to an accident when a Swiss hang gliders collided with a Gleitschirmfieger and crashed from around 30 meters height.
