Cousin Bazilio

Cousin Basilio is a novel by Jose Maria Eca de Queiroz in 1878 the first published under the title O Primo Basílio. Although the body of work is not unique to a literary period, Eca de Queiroz is a major narrator of Portuguese realism. This applies in a special way for the present novel, which can also be read historically.

Cousin Basilio is one of the great Love, seduction and adultery novels of the 19th century. Luísa has been married for years, though childless, but happier marriage to mining engineer Jorge Carvalho. Before marriage she was the playmate of her childhood, her cousin Basilio engaged. Basilio had fled from creditors to South America and had solved the engagement with Luísa writing from there. Jorge has to leave the ministry and professional traveling for a long time because of a job his job.
