Cowdenbeath

Cowdenbeath is a town in the Scottish unitary authority Fife. It is about ten kilometers north-east of Dunfermline and a good 30 kilometers north- west of Edinburgh located. In 2001 Cowdenbeath recorded 11,627 inhabitants.

History

Originally Cowdenbeath was a small rural settlement, which then in the course of development of the coal and ore deposits in Fife in 1850 grew considerably. So the population of Cowdenbeath 1148 rose in 1861, within 20 years to 2712. At the height of about 25,000 lived in Cowdenbeath. With the increasing closure of the mines, the population declined again, and varies from 1961 to 12,000. Since 1881 there is with FC Cowdenbeath today a professional football club based in Cowdenbeath.

Traffic

Cowdenbeath is connected by the A92 just south running that connects via Dundee Dunfermline with Stonehaven on the national road network. A few kilometers west runs the M90 motorway, which runs south from Dunfermline over the Forth Bridge to Edinburgh. In the 19th century a separate station was established in Cowdenbeath. Today it is operated by First ScotRail on the Fife Circle Line.
