Cozumel Island coati

The Nelson - coati, also known as island or Cozumel coati called (Nasua nelsoni ) is a predatory species from the family of raccoons ( Procyonidae ).

Nelson coatis are on the island of Cozumel, which is upstream of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, endemic. They resemble the White Elephant trunk coati, but are distinguished by their short, silky fur and significantly smaller size, which is a form of Inselverzwergung. How to reach a total length of 74-78 centimeters ( while the animals on the mainland reach more than 1 meter in length ).

About their life little is known, as the other coatis they are likely to feed on fruits, insects and small vertebrates.

The IUCN lists the Nelson - Coati as threatened, the reasons for this are firstly the hurricanes that have ravaged the island again and again, on the other hand, the risk of introducing alien species on island.

The taxonomic status of this species is controversial. Sometimes it is viewed merely as a subspecies of the White Elephant trunk coati or as a deported by the Maya to the island population.
