Craig First

Craig P. First ( born March 16, 1960 in Harrisburg / Pennsylvania) is an American composer and music educator.

First studied at the American Conservatory in Chicago at Jack C. Goode, Stephen Syverud and Alan Stout and the University of Chicago with Shulamit Ran. A doctoral degree in composition, he graduated from Northwestern University. From 1990 to 1995 he was professor of composition and music theory at Northwestern University and taught at DePaul University, after which he became a teacher of composition at the University of Alabama. Since 1992 he has been artistic director of the Chicago 21st Century Music Ensemble.

Commissions received First of musicians and ensembles such as Dimitris Marinos, Paul Bowman, Raimundas Katilus, the Lark Quartet, the Vienna Saxophone Quartet and the University of Chicago Chamber Orchestra. He was winner of the American ISCM National Composers Competition, the Concurso Internacional Composicion de Musical in Spain, the Fourth Annual International Spectri Sonori Competition, the 12th Annual National Association of Composers, USA Competition, and three times (1998, 2000 and 2002 ) of the American Composers Forum Sonic Circuits, and was among others three times with the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts Award fifteen years in a row awarded an ASCAP Standard Award and the ASCAP Young Composers Award.

As a student, First dealt intensively with electronic and computer- generated music. He was known primarily as a composer of chamber music, but he also composed on behalf of Charles E. Moore and the ACM Chamber Opera of Chicago's Opera The Soul of Rose Dede.
