Creosote is a mixture of guaiacol and cresol, which is obtained by the distillation of coal tar. It is used as a wood preservative. Since some of the substances are carcinogenic, the release of creosote and wood so treated since June 30, 2003 is available for private use prohibited ( the EU Commission Directive). However, creosote may in the context of industrial processes, eg for the treatment of railway sleepers and telephone poles, tree support for agriculture and vine stakes, are used. After a decision to revise the Directive of July 2011, however, the industrial use is provided with stricter requirements from 2013. You will then only be possible if an exemption is granted. Member States may authorize creosote, if not at least as suitable alternative is available.

The smell of the product gave the creosote bush its name.
