Crespina

Crespina is a district of the municipality Crespina Lorenzana in the Province of Pisa in the Tuscany region of Italy with 4188 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Geography

Crespina is about 25 km southeast of Pisa in the Tuscan hill country. A larger part of the village, next to the actual Crespina, the village Cenaia. Adjacent locations are Cascina, Collesalvetti Fauglia, Lari and Lorenzana.

History and Economics

Crespina is first mentioned in a document dating from 1119. At that time there was a castle in the possession of the Bishop of Pisa. The area was the city of Pisa for the supply of foodstuffs ( cereals, olive oil, wine). After changes of power between Pisa and Lucca, the castle was taken in 1405 by the Florentines, and looped in 1434. In modern times, the church first belonged to Livorno, then Fauglia, and was self-employed since 1902. On January 1, 2014, the place with the neighboring municipality of Lorenzana has been merged into the new municipality of Lorenzana Crespina.

Economically important are agriculture (viticulture, breeding Weinrebablegern, flowers), crafts (textiles, furniture ) and agri-tourism.

Culture and sights

To Crespina are several beautiful country villas, which were built by Pisa and Livorno nobles as summer homes, including Villa Valdisonzi, Villa della Canonica and Villa del Belvedere.
