Lorenzana

Lorenzana is a district of the municipality Crespina Lorenzana in the Province of Pisa in the Tuscany region of Italy with 1200 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Geography

Lorenzana is located about 35 km southeast of Pisa in a wooded rolling hills, the. Colline Pisane, above the valley of the river Torah To place the part on a hill lying medieval-themed village Lorenzana and the smaller districts Laura and Tremoleto.

The site is bordered to the north by Crespina, to the east by Casciana Terme and Lari, on the south by Orciano Pisano and Santa Luce and on the west by Fauglia.

History and Economics

The town's name is derived from a Latin proper names ( Lawrence, it Lorentianum or Laurentian ). In the Middle Ages the town was a settlement to a ( no longer existing ) castle, which stood until the 10th century under the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Pisa; from this period ( 927 and 934 ) where the first written mentions of the town. 1131 Lorenzana is then mentioned in a bull of Pope Innocent II. The place came to the Republic of Pisa and was secured by a city wall and watchtowers. 1406 became the place under the rule of the Republic of Florence, which granted the city municipal autonomy. 1722 Lorenzana was from Cosimo III. explained to the county and transferred to the Florentine nobleman Francesco Lorenzi as a fief. Already in 1783 it came back to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and became a separate municipality. On January 1, 2014, the place with the neighboring municipality of Crespina was merged into the new municipality of Lorenzana Crespina.

In the past, the place almost exclusively on agriculture (wine, olive oil, fruit and grain, livestock ) and forestry lived. Today, its importance has decreased somewhat and in the community, some small industrial enterprises have settled ( food, clothing, furniture, leather goods).

Culture and sights

  • Chiesa dei Santi Bartolomeo e Cristoforo - The the local saint Bartholomew and St. Christopher parish church stands on the site of an earlier building dating from the 14th century. The old church was demolished in 1775-1776 and rebuilt in today's nave form.
  • Palazzo dei Lorenzi - The Palace next to the church was during the Florentine domination seat of the Podestà.
  • Chiesa dei Santi Fabiano e Sebastiano - Church in the district Tremoleto rebuilt with medieval origins, 1787.
  • In Lorenzana there are also some villas (Villa Giuli, Villa and Villa Scotti Sforni ).
