Casciana Terme

Casciana Terme is a village in the municipality Casciana Terme Lari with 3607 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Pisa in the Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The site covers approximately 37 km ². It is located about 60 km southwest of Florence and 30 km south of Pisa in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, 1747 GG.

Other districts include Ceppato, Collemontanino, Parlascio and Sant'Ermo.

The nearby towns are Chianni, Lari, Lorenzana, Santa Luce and Terricciola.

History

Earlier name of the place were Bagno ad Acqua and Bagni di Casciana (bath waterfront or baths of Casciana ). Around 800 the place Castrum ad Aquis was called. Until 1927 Casciana Terme was part of the municipality of Lari. The now place name with the additional terms was chosen to differ from the adjacent Casciana Alta ( higher ground Casciana ), a district of Lari. In the Middle Ages the church was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Pisa. The baths were rediscovered in the 11th century by Matilda of Canossa and have a constant temperature of 35.7 ° C. In 1362 the town was destroyed in the wars between Florence and Pisa and taken completely out of Florence in 1515. 1776 Casciana was assigned to the municipality of Lari and 1927 it was a separate municipality. On January 1, 2014, the town was again merged with Lari for the new community now Casciana Terme Lari.
