Bientina

Bien Tina is a municipality with 7891 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian region of Tuscany. It belongs to the province of Pisa.

Geography

The municipality covers 29 km ². It is located about 60 km west of Florence and 15 km east of Pisa.

The districts include Caccialupi, Puntone, Quattro Strade and Santa Colomba.

The neighboring municipalities are Altopascio (LU), Buti, Calcinaia, Cpannori ( LU), Castelfranco di Sotto, Santa Maria a Monte, Vicopisano

Bien Tina lies on the east side of the mountain range of Monte Pisano, on the wide, reclaimed bed of the former lake of Bien Tina.

History

The place Bien Tina was mentioned in the year 793 for the first time, and was then long under the rule of the Archbishop of Pisa. From the 13th to the 15th century Bien Tina belonged alternately to the city republics of Lucca and Pisa, until it finally Florence submitted in 1402.

Bien Tina was known by the draining of the lake. This was once the largest Tuscan inland waters was at the limit of the sphere of the States Florence and Lucca, and has been extensively used for fishing. Since the flood of the Arno led to periodic flooding and initial work to drain the lake and the adjacent marshland have been made under Cosimo I de ' Medici. Succeeded, but these were only in the second half of the 19th century under the government of Leopoldo II

In the years 1965-1966 larger parts of the historic city center of Bien Tina were demolished as part of refurbishment work. Today, the area of the municipality is economically dominated by small businesses (furniture, leather goods).

  • Museo Etruscans ( Etruscan Museum ) in the deconsecrated church of San Girolamo. The collection includes finds from the territory of the municipality, which were discovered in part at the drainage works.
