In the High Middle Ages, the city was from 1313 under the direct rule of Pisa. In 1406 he came under the influence of Florence.

1630 Orciano was transferred from Ferdinando II as a fief to the noble family Degli Obizzi who bore the title of Marchese di Orciano. 1783 came this Marchesato Orciano with the abolition of the feudal system back directly to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and became a separate municipality.

On August 14, 1846 Orciano, as well as some neighboring communities, was shaken by a strong earthquake; of the 113 houses in the town have been destroyed 99. Of the 761 residents 19 people died and 170 were injured.
