Peccioli

Volterra is a municipality with 4580 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Pisa in the Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality extends over some 93 km ². It is located about 50 km southwest of Florence and 35 km southeast of Pisa. The village lies on the Era and the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, GG 1772.

The districts include Cedri, Fabbrica, Ghizzano, Legoli, Libbiano, Montecchio and Montelopio.

The neighboring municipalities are Capannoli, Lajatico, Montaione ( FI), Palaia, Terricciola and Volterra.

History

The place name has been noted since 793 under Picciole, petiole and Pecciori and probably derives from the Latin word picea (pines). The district Legoli was first documented on January 22, 1139. Considering the location, the community and its districts in the Middle Ages several times the scene of hostilities between Pisa, Lucca and Florence were changed several times and the Republic of affiliation between those of the Pisan and Florentine. The Kingdom of Sardinia annexed the area in 1859, and Sardinia was the place with the Italian unification of the province of Tuscany.

Attractions

  • Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta in the hamlet of Fabbrica, mentioned already in the 10th century church contains works by Benedetto and Benedetto Buglioni Buglioni.
