Benedetto Buglioni

Benedetto Buglioni (* between the December 20, 1459 and March 21, 1460 in Florence, † March 7, 1521 in Florence ) was an Italian sculptor and Terrakottabildner.

Life

Benedetto Buglioni was a son of the stone cutter Giovanni di Bernardo d' Antonio and brother also active as a sculptor Francesco Buglioni. He grew up near the workshop of Luca Della Robbia and Andrea and was thus probably inspired to follow them. According to Vasari him working in the workshop of Andrea Della Robbia woman gave the secret of glazed terra-cotta, which he then successfully imitated. Much more likely is that he was trained in the Della Robbia workshop, which was adjacent to his father's workshop in sculpture and thus also in the glaze technique. As his later works also have strong influences from Antonio Rosselino, can not be completely ruled out that he's gone there as well in teaching. Because the fact is that he worked in the style of Della Robbia and is responsible for ensuring that their glaze technology outside of Florence rather widespread.

For the year 1484 the earliest independent work of Benedetto is documented, a now -lost " Christ in Limbo ," which he executed for the church of SS Annunziata. Between 1487 and 1490 he led in stone, along with his brother Francesco, the Cappella del Santo Anello in the Cathedral of San Pietro in Perugia, of the have received only two busts of the Prophets "David" and " Isaiah ". Even during this work, or right after, he led for the altar of San Jacopo in Perugia a relief with the " Resurrection of Christ" from, for which he was paid in 1490. In the same year, but no later than 1491, he opened his own workshop in Florence and took over, along with his brother, on behalf of Cardinal Giovanni de ' Medici, the facade design at the Santuario di Santa Cristina in Bolsena. The case executed sculptural works, particularly the " grave sculpture of St. Christina" are now considered his most important works. Following this work Benedetto worked in many other cities, especially in Tuscany. In 1504 he was a member of the Commission, which decided the future site of Michelangelo's "David". Around 1508 he took the son of the cousin of his father, Santi Tommaso di Michele, who later Santi Buglioni called himself, with him, and taught him his craft and instructed him in his art.

Style

Benedetto Buglioni has left a rich oeuvre of largely undisputed works, which it still is a large amount of predominantly recognized write-ups to the side. He is in direct succession to the Della Robbia and comes in his art the Giovanni Della Robbia, with whom he perhaps learned together, very close. Stylistically, he is close also Antonio Rosselino but Maiano, Desiderio was oriented in addition also visible on Benedetto da da Settignano and Francesco di Simone Ferrucci. After the takeover of the glaze technique, he soon began to experiment with this. In contrast to the work Della Robbia its glaze is often thin and uneven and acts in the entire light applied, and is also less translucent.
