Andrea Della Robbia

Andrea Della Robbia ( born October 28, 1435 Florence, † August 4, 1525 ibid ), a member of the sculptor Della Robbia family, was a Florentine Renaissance artist who worked in clay. His father Marco di Simone was a member of arte della lana, lived in the same household, the uncle Giovanni, a notary public, and the sculptor Luca, whose pupil he was. After the death of his father in 1448 Luca took Andrea a its place, both lived life together. By Andreas brothers Simone is the progenitor of today's family Viviani della Robbia. He was registered since 1465 in the matriculation of arte dei maestri di pietra e legname and was several times elected consul of the guild. Unlike his brother, he received no artistic training, but was repeatedly do orders for Luca. After his death, he was forced to cede to Andrea its share of house and workshop.

Andrea soon reached an important position in the workshop of his uncle, he was able in 1455 to take over the first independent contract: a Madonna, who was taken for a Medici villa, whose traces have, however, lost. First, he held on to the embossed by his uncle style of the company, but had his Madonnas the baby Jesus at the right hand, the left to Luca. A distinctive individuality can not be found in his early works. 1458 he was admitted as intagliatore (stone cutter) in the arte dei maestri di pietra e legname and so laid the foundation for later self-employment since first working with Luca was even more intense. Some orders his uncle seems to be only involved in the design and the implementation of all the nephews left to have. Around 1470 Andrea seems to have completely taken over the management of the workshop; Luca demanded financial compensation and concluded Andrea of his inheritance from ( 1471 ) because his teachings have already helped him considerable wealth.

He developed techniques of glaze and created in this material alongside smaller architectural decoration also Sopraporten and large altarpiece. Almost always there are high reliefs.
