Palaia

Palaia is a municipality with 4580 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Pisa in the Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality extends over some 74 km ². It is located about 45 km southwest of Florence and 30 km southeast of Pisa. Some districts lie along the rivers Era and Roglio.

The districts include Alica, Baccanella, Chiecinella, Colleoli, Forcoli Gello, Montefoscoli, Montanelli, Partino, San Gervasio, Toiano and Villa Saletta.

The neighboring municipalities are Capannoli, Montaione ( FI), Montopoli in Val d' Arno, Volterra, San Miniato and Pontedera.

History

For the first time in written form down the place was mentioned in 1077. Due to its location the church in the Middle Ages several times the scene of hostilities between Pisa, Lucca and Florence, and changed hands several times between the Republic of membership which the Pisans and the Florentine was.

  • Chiesa di Sant'Andrea, already mentioned church in 1201, contains the work of Madonna with Child by Francesco di Valdambrino.
  • Pieve di San Martino, 1280 resulting Pieve.
