Riparbella

Riparbella is a municipality of the Province of Pisa in the Tuscany region of Italy with 1622 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

The village lies on a hill on the southern slopes of the Colline Pisane, on a ridge of tuff, about 14 km from the town of Cecina and the sea. Riparbella is surrounded by scrub, forest, vineyards and olive groves, and known for its good Tuscan cuisine (game, mushrooms and wine - the place is part of the growing area Montescudaio ).

History

Excavations in the district Belora confirmed that Riparbella was inhabited by the Etruscans. Probably the name is from the Latin Ripa Albella derives (white slope ), which alludes to the bright tuff. The medieval village was built around the year 1000, and the place is first mentioned in writing in 1125. Until 1406 Riparbella belonged to the dominion of Pisa, then to Florence. 1635, the city of the Medici was raised to the Margraviate, and it began an economic decline. 1737 there was a fief of the Florentine senator Carlo Ginori, who united it with his possessions in Cecina. Under Grand Duke Leopold I Riparbella 1780 independent municipality.

The place had the early 1950s still about 3,000 inhabitants, but then shrank by a migration of the population. Today Riparbella lives mainly from agriculture ( viticulture, olive growing ) and tourism; on the territory of the municipality are numerous holiday resorts, inns and agri- tourism businesses.

Culture and sights

The center of the village is dominated by buildings from the 15th and 16th centuries.

Churches

  • Church of San Giovanni Evangelista - The church dedicated to the Apostle John was built in 1841-1845. The tower dates from an older church (15th century)
  • Oratorio della Madonna delle Grazie - chapel, built in the 16th century
