Montecatini Val di Cecina

Montecatini Val di Cecina is a municipality with 1814 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Pisa in the Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality extends over approximately 155 km ². It is located about 85 km southwest of Florence and 60 km south of Pisa in the wine region of Montescudaio. The place is located in the climatic classification of Italian communities in Zone E, ​​2107 GG.

The districts include Ponteginori and Sassa.

The neighboring municipalities are Bibbona (LI ), Guardistallo, Lajatico, Montescudaio, Monteverdi Marittimo Pomarance, Riparbella and Volterra.

History

The Castello di Montecatini was founded around 960 by the family of Volterra Belforti. The place was first mentioned in 1099 in a document of the Bishop of Volterra Pietro as Castrum Montis Leonis or Monteleone ( Lowenberg and fort Lowenberg ). After the defeat of Volterra to Pisa in 1316 the place passed into the Pisan territory, but left him again in 1350 to the family of Belforti. 1472, it fell under the control of Florence and the Vicariate Val di Cecina based in Pomerance. From the 19th century until 1907, the copper industry was important in 1911 was the Halitherstellung by the Belgian company Solvay for the main industry.
