Critical apparatus

The text- critical apparatus listed in a historical-critical edition ( PCA ) of a work, the different variants of the main text. Text -critical apparatus necessary for scientific work, if there is a work several different editions with different texts, or if gaps, subsequent revisions, corrections, commentaries or translations have changed the original text. With the help of textual criticism, the editor decides which text should be the main text and which comes as a note in the critical apparatus. The apparatus provides information about other versions and if possible explain how it came about. In contrast, expenditures are determined without the critical apparatus for general use and are designated as read output.

The apparatus (Latin apparatus " equipping ", " Equipment " ) listed in the strict sense of the variants of the Lore and history of a text in critical editions. In a broader sense it includes as a separately printed part following an edited text especially in historical-critical editions of texts of the recent literature the description of all text support, the rationale for the choice of the basic text, the legislative history, the variant directory justifications for text shape, a documentation of the sources and text reception during the lifetime of the author, and notes ( the comment ).

Single station set

This form of the apparatus is the simplest form of apparatus types. It is particularly suitable for corrections to the text that are not available in a narrower context. Thus, differences between letters, transcripts and various pressures can be represented well. One case still distinguishes the positive ( lemmatized (Greek: Lemma = Received ) apparatus ) and the negative apparatus. When apparatus is positive, in an open left bracket (] ), given the reference word from the text. After that are the different variants.

As an example of a fictional text: " The yellow ( 1) clock in Prague"

In the apparatus is: (1) yellow ] gold H ²

H ² is an abbreviation or initials for a manuscript that will be explained in more detail in the apparatus. So is in the handwriting of H ² " The golden clock in Prague". The publisher has chosen " The yellow ( 1) clock in Prague".

When negative apparatus is omitted the reference word. So the camera would look at the same text as: (1) golden H ²

Display apparatus

The corrections are " hidden " in the body of the text. Different correction forms are, for example, points in points, unsafe deciphered letters, marked. These characters are called diacritical marks, but they can vary from edition to edition.

Staircase apparatus

This device then makes sense if the author has made immediate corrections. The correction sequences are indicated by an ascending digits or letters. Thus, the chronology is clear. The advantage is that you can understand all the many stages.
