Cross Plains is a city in Callahan County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in the southeastern corner of the county, just north of the geographical center of Texas and has a total area of 3.1 km ² without significant water surface.

History

The former settlement had the name Turkey Creek and Schleicher. 1877, with the commissioning of the first post offices, it was renamed to the current name. 1880 Cross Plains had 25 inhabitants, in 1885 there were 175 municipal law got the place in 1910 with 600 residents. Since 1909, the newspaper " Cross Plains Review" appears. 1912 reached the Texas Central Railway Cross Plains. As 1925 was discovered in the vicinity of oil, the town became a local shopping center for agricultural products. 1940 the population was 1,229 and remained almost stable until the 1980s. After the railway line was discontinued after Cross Plains, the population dropped to 1,063 in 1990.

According to the census of 2000, there were 1,068 people in 432 households and 285 families. The population density was 343.6 inhabitants per km ². Approximately 0.56% were of mixed descent, and 5.34 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 432 households 28.9 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.2 % were married couples living together. 10.6% were single mothers and 33.8 % were non-families. 32.2 % of all households were single-person households, and 19.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size amounted to 3.03.

25.1% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.3 % from 18 to 24, 21.7% 25-44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 23.5 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 84.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 81.0 males.

The median income for a household was $ 22,235, and the median income for a family $ 27,500. Males have a median income of $ 22,188 versus $ 17,955 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,284. 23.3 % of the population and 18.5 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 33.3 % have children under the age of 18 and 19.0 % of those 65 or older.
