Crossmolina

Crossmolina ( Crois Uí Mhaoilíona Irish ) is located on the N59, near Ballina in the vicinity of Lough Conn, both sides of the river Deel, in the northeast of County Mayo in Ireland. The name goes back to a cross that was built for a member of Fiachrach clan. From Nephin Mountain has a view over the countryside. The village has 930 inhabitants (as of 2006).

From the early history of the area is recorded that the kings of Hy - Fiachrach at Inniscoe and on the island of Annagh Lough Conn Rath chatted. In Crossmolina is a settlement that was built around about 1300 AD Abbey Crossmolina, a foundation of DeBarry family. In 1526, O'Donnell destroyed by Tirconnell the place. From 1570 was Richard de Burke, the owner of Crossmolina, participated in the rebellion against the British government. The British were victorious in 1586 in the " windy gap" and brought the captives on one of the islands in Lough Conn.
