Cruel Summer (song)

Cruel Summer is a song by Bananarama in 1983, which was written by the band and the duo Jolley & Swain. The latter also produced the song, which appeared on the album Bananarama and was used in the movie Karate Kid.

History

In an interview with The Guardian said Sara Dallin of Bananarama that the song alludes to the darker side of summer.

The song was released on June 27, 1983. By using in the movie Karate Kid, the song reached the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984 Bananarama however did not allow the piece on the soundtrack album released for the film. Music Video

The music video was filmed in New York. This video shows the band members as a car mechanic inner work. Later, the girl group dances around with pedestrians on a sidewalk during which comes a truck. As one of the members Bananaramas places a call in a phone booth, the truck stops and the girl group ask the driver to take her to flee from the police, who became aware of the group before. The driver drives off with the truck and the girl group pelted the pursuing police car with banana peels to obstruct the police visibility. At the end of the music video, the group gets out and goes to a party.
