Cryptococcus neoformans

Cryptococcus is a genus widespread yeasts from the family of Filobasidiaceae. Cryptococcal form round, 3-6 micron sized budding cells. The genus includes the cryptococcosis pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans, Cryptococcus gattii and Cryptococcus bacillisporus.

Cryptococcus species is a form, which includes the anamorphic ( asexual only proliferating ) of the genus Filobasidiella. Representatives, which bears no teleomorph (sexual) form to Filobasidiella are today placed in other genera.

Cryptococcus is the world's most common cause of invasive fungal infections collectively known as cryptococcosis, and is connected with one of the highest mortality rates. Annually, estimated one million people worldwide on a cryptococcal meningitis, of which 625,000 patients die from it. Cryptococcal are the most common causative agents of meningitis in sub-Saharan Africa.
