CTD (instrument)

The CTD rosette (of English Conductivity, Temperature, Depth, "Conductivity, temperature, depth ") is a probe for deep-sea research.

It is usually lowered by oceanographers of research vessels on a long rope of several thousand meters water depth ( " eased ").

The rosette consists of a cylindrical frame which is mounted with sensors for temperature, conductivity and water pressure. This may result in more basic parameters density, salinity and water depth are calculated. Additional sensors such as turbidity meter, oxygen meter and acoustic flow meter can be attached.

When pulling up the CTD rosette of deep water water sampler can be closed in different water depths. Thus, these samples can be analyzed according to the respective water depths on trace substances and micro-organisms.
