Cumaribo

Cumaribo is a Colombian municipality in the department of Vichada. It lies on the border with Venezuela. The municipality has 28,718 inhabitants (as of 2005), of which only 4,312 live in urban areas. Cumaribo is geographically the largest municipality in Colombia with an area greater than that of Israel and Switzerland.

In March 2011, 23 local employees of a subsidiary of Talisman Energy were kidnapped near Cumaribo.

The security situation in the area is poor ( currently March 2011). According to government figures, there are activities of the FARC and various criminal gangs.

Geography

Cumaribo situated at an altitude of about 125 meters. The municipality is bordered on the north by Santa Rosalia, La Primavera and Puerto Carreño, on the south by the Department of Guaviare, on the west by the department of Meta, and to the east by Venezuela.
