Cumulopuntia sphaerica

Cumulopuntia is a genus of flowering plants of the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Latin noun " cumulus " heap for and refers to the growth form of the plants.

Description

The species of the genus Cumulopuntia grow low and form densely branched cushion. The spherical, elliptical or egg-shaped drive sections are plump and about 10 inches long. The tiny 9.5 to 5 millimeters long leaves are usually cylindrical and fall off early. The areoles bear glochids, hair and usually thorns.

The red or yellow flowers close up at night. The elliptical, oval to spherical fruits are thick-walled and meaty. They contain spherical to spherical - ovoid to pear- shaped, beige to brown, sometimes wrinkled seeds from 3 to 5.5 millimeters in length.

Systematics and distribution

The species of the genus Cumulopuntia are common in the south of Peru, Chile, Bolivia and northern Argentina.

The first description of the genus was made in 1980 by Friedrich Ritter. The type species of the genus Opuntia is ignescens. Belong to the genus of the following types:
